Backdrop CMS is a branch of Drupal, but is not a competitor. It is addressed to another market segment, that of small and medium enterprises, NGOs, to the thousands of small web agencies developing sites for small and medium businesses, which do not have the capabilities and resources to administer complex systems such as Drupal 8 and 9, which henceforth will focus on "ambitious sites" with a budget of at least a few tens of thousands of dollars or euros.
In this way, Backdrop CMS keeps in the Drupal "family" and in the inherited common culture and values millions of existing Drupal users and fans with smaller capabilities and budgets that would otherwise migrate to other systems such as Wordpress or popular and quite aggressive recently closed commercial systems such as SAAS (software as a service).
Backdrop CMS adopts many of the progressive ideas in improving the user interface, improving the user experience and ease of content administration achieved in the newer versions 8 and 9 of Drupal, but retains and transfers them to an environment that is much more accessible to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as to numerous civic organizations.
In turn, Backdrop CMS adds many new and unique improvements and inventions for even better and easier administration of web content, which makes it not only a successor and custodian of a great tradition, but also a new innovative direction in the development of free open source software code as an important tool for the development of modern civil society, business and social entrepreneurship.
